Acne is a common skin condition that has many causes. Most often, a combination of hormones and an overproduction of oil is the culprit, but a buildup of dead skin cells, sweat, hair gel, hair spray, or certain medications can also cause acne.


Preventing most cases of acne is as easy as a good skin care routine. The skin should be gently cleansed daily to remove makeup, sweat and other accumulations. Skin should remain moisturized in order to discourage overproduction of oil, so harsh cleaners should not be used. Many over-the-counter products are available to clean the skin and reduce production of oil. Keeping products such as hair gel and hairspray away from the skin and avoiding heavy makeup application will also reduce instances of acne. It is also important to keep hands away from the face and avoid picking at the skin.
